I am usually the type of girl who does not mind talking about gross things while I'm eating. I do not get grossed out when someone is bleeding a little or if I'm bleeding myself, but the dramatized bloody scene in Sweeney Todd was a little too much for me.
It is kind of hard to watch blood squirting out of someones neck with out closing my eyes or making a face. Sometimes it makes me feel as if I am feeling there pain watching them die such a gruesome death. I know the blood is fake, but it still has the same effect as if it was real.
In English last semester we talked about how the tune in the movie Jaws implemented fear in the viewer because it warned him/her the man-eating shark was coming. Now everytime I see Sweeney Todd's razor I am going to think of another blood squirting out-of-the-neck ordeal. The movie is still not over and I have been told there are numerous other victims.
The meat pies are a little creepy too. The idea of eating the flesh of a person has some influence on whether I will be happy to eat Grandma's chicken pot pie (And not because my grandma uses human flesh in her pies).
To wrap it up I just have to say slicing throats are a little much for me. Thankfully the glimpse of Sweeney's razor will warn me of the bloody scene that is coming ahead.
Yeah Brittany I'm with you. I typically do not watch movies like this one, although have seen it before. I knew what the movie was before we started to watch and was not very excited to see Sweeney killing people again. In my Chorus group at Fred. T Foard we had to sing the medley of Sweeney Todd. It is the main music that plays throughout the movie. Yeah its really creepy. It is much worse to sing about a weird barber than watch him in a movie. We also had to watch original Broadway play of Sweeney Todd. It was creepy too. I cringe at watching blood in a movie, but at least Johnny Depp can sing pretty well and its not hard to listen to him sing :). Even though I am familiar with the movie I still do not enjoy seeing all the horrible killing scenes. I guess me and you will just have to look away when those scenes come :).........haha.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. I figured that since Sweeney Todd was a musical it would have a killer in it, but not such a menacing killer. I did not know it would have as graphic killing scenes as it did. There was a disturbing quality to people light heartedly singing about killing people and baking them into meat pies. I find it really disgusting that they would make pies out of humans and sell them to the public, it just seems wrong. The only upside to this movie was that it had Johnny Depp in it, and he sang. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree to an extent. I tried to watch the movie from the point of view that it was all fake and it was supposed to be comical, so when Todd killed someone, I would kind of just say to myself "yeah, oh well. You knew it was coming". So for the most part, the movie did not bother me. I do have to say, though, the scene where Todd killed the Judge, was pretty terrible. I even cringed and made a face. I mean, how can you just repeatedly stab someone and cut their throat and have their blood spewing everywhere and be okay with it? I liked this movie, but that one scene was a bit too much for me.
ReplyDeleteBrittany I believe you said the best thing a director of cinema, well it certain contexts of course, would love to hear come out of every critics mouth. That thing is “I know the blood is fake, but it still has the same effect as if it was real.” I believe that shows true acting, and directing talent; to be able to convince an audience that what they are witnessing is so fantastically gruesome, or stunning, that after the shock wears off they have to remind themselves that it is fake.
ReplyDeleteBrittany I will also agree with you that Sweeney Todd was way too bloody. I have never really enjoyed scary or bloody movies and after watching this movie I was reminded why. Even though I would have to say that the story line was somewhat interesting! I also beleive the movie would of been just as good with a little less blood!
ReplyDeleteYeah Brittany, i agree with you, the blood was too much for me. The most greusome part to me was when Senior peruelli was decapetated, that was so grose. You are right when you say that even though the blood is fake, it still has the same effect. I would hate to be in a horror movie with all that fake blood.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that the blood was way too much. The fact that the body was shaking and the blood started to squirt out was too much for me to handle and I had to close my eyes. Since this movie was a musical I never expected it to be that guesome at all.
